United States - Claimed Nokia, BlackBerry maker is infringing its patent relating to technology wireless local access network (WLAN).
A judge jury supports Nokia. Jury such as the Finnish company said it found evidence that RIM had violated the contract. RIM is thus not entitled to manufacture or sell WLAN products without royalty agreement.
Reported by Reuters on Wednesday (28/11/2012), Nokia is trying to explore other sources of income from royalty income, registering a patent dispute in court Amerikat States, Britain and Canada. This is done to strengthen the outcome of the trial.
"This will impact significantly on the financial side. All BlackBerry device supports WLAN, although the volume is small in these countries," according to an IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo.
According to Nokia, it and RIM signed a cross-licensing agreement in 2003. This Agreement includes standard mobile patents. Furthermore, the agreement was modified in 2008. RIM is seeking arbitration in 2011. They argued that the license should be extended to include WLAN patents.
Nokia together with Ericsson and Qualcomm, lead as the leading patent holder in the wireless industry. For Nokia itself, patent royalties generate annual revenues of approximately USD 646 million. Meanwhile, RIM has not given his comments associated with this report.
